Things To Do In L.A.

As the West Coast Eisteddfod approaches we are aware that many people will be travelling from outside L.A. and indeed from outside the USA to attend this event. This is the first in an occasional informational series for first time visitors to L.A. Today we present a personal view with advice and recommendations from AmeriCymru member Margaret Lloyd Beckham.

2) Getting around in LA is not difficult with Public Transit (or so my brother says). If you have a GPS device, take it with you, and set it for LA. There are no toll roads to worry about.

It has the Gene Autry Museum, Train Town (you can ride the train there), a Zoo, and an Equestrian Park where you can ride horses. Along the South End of the Park, there is an area that reminds you of the "land that time forgot". There are huge, beautiful ferns, plenty of places to picnic, and beautiful scenery. A lot of people use this for birthday parties, and other family gatherings. It's quite beautiful.

4) The WCE site is also close to Hollywood and Vine, a very famous location. Don't bother trying to get up to the "Hollywood" sign, taking a "Hollywood" star tour, or buying star's maps. It's a waste of your money.

5) Investigate your hotel, motel or lodgings ahead of time. Don't pick some cut rate place just to save a dollar or two. Find a nice hotel and find out if you can make a deal with them. They are more likely to give a good rate, especially if you prepay. There are a lot of good hotels. We want you to be happy, not stuck in some awful place. By Sept., the tourists will be gone and there should be  plenty of vacancies.

6) Weather in LA will be about 60-75 degrees; it's beautiful weather. You may need a jacket in the mornings and evenings. It can get very cool due to the ocean breeze.

7) There are great restaurants in LA, and the prices will vary with how nice the restaurant is. We  will be adding more information to this list as soon as we get it.

8) Some expressed a wish to go to San Francisco once the WCE concludes. Travel between 10 AM & 3PM so the traffic isn't so bad. A fun thing to do is drive up the PCH (Pacific Coast Hwy 1), which goes through Malibu, Point Magu, Zuma Beach, Ventura (for sport fishing), Santa Barbara (has a Marina and small public beach, you can also take a champagne cruise), Morro Bay (rock formation), Cambria (where the pines meet the sea), San Simeon (famous Hearst Castle), Big Sur, south of Carmel there is a Sea Otter Game Refuge, then Carmel (beautiful bay), Monterrey (larger bay and a famous Aquarium), Santa Cruz, San luis Obispo, then San Francisco. Once you get there, you won't want to leave. You may see dolphins, whales, & seals in different locations along the coast. There are lots of B & B's and hotels along the coast, and quirky hotel called Madonna near Cambria. Keep in mind that is can be cool in San Francisco (same latitute as England & N.. France).

Matthew Rhys's first book - Patagonia

Patagonia has long intrigued many an intrepid traveller, particularly the Welsh, who flock to this area of South America to trace the footsteps of their ancestors, founders of a Welsh speaking colony in the area back in 1865, which still survives to this day.

Hollywood actor and Welshman Matthew Rhys, is one such traveller. Patagonia is a photographic account of his month-long journey on horseback from the Atlantic to the Andes. His co-riders were all descendants of the 30 Welsh-speakers who had made the same gruelling journey 125 years ago.

Evocative black-and-white photography features throughout, along with extended captions for each of the 90 images. Penned by Matthew Rhys, these provide the reader with first-hand insight into the demands of the trek and an overview of the lives of his fellow travellers.

The author’s introduction will also provide the journey’s historical context, and will remind the reader of the pioneering courage of those Welshmen who originally established the Welsh colony in Patagonia.

'Owain Glyndwr: Prince of Wales' by R.R. Davies published by Y Lolfa

Popular Version of Inspiring Glyn Dŵr Story Published

front cover of Owain Glyndwr Prince of Wales by R.R. Davies
A new concise and accessible study of the life and legacy of Owain Glyn Dŵr, whose revolt against England’s rule of Wales in the early 15th century ensured his status as a national hero, is published this week by Y Lolfa. R R Davies, author of Owain Glyn Dŵr: Prince of Wales, was Chichele Professor of Medieval History at All Souls College, Oxford and was regarded as the main authority on Glyn Dŵr’s uprising before his death in 2005. In his introduction to the original Welsh version of the book he said,

“If there is any subject from Welsh history which deserves to be retold, then it is the story of Owain and his revolt. I have the privilege of having been born and reared in Glyn Dŵr’s own land. In a way this volume is some small repayment for the inheritance I received in that special countryside.”

Owain was voted the most influential Welsh person of the millennium in a BBC Wales poll and revolutionaries from around the world including Fidel Castro have been influenced by his pioneering guerrilla warfare tactics. There have been petitions and internet campaigns for a Braveheart style film on Owain Glyn Dŵr, with names such as Ioan Gruffudd and Matthew Rhys being touted to play the leading role. Publishers Y Lolfa hope that this accessible book will raise the profile of Glyn Dŵr introducing one of the most inspiring stories of Welsh history to thousands of new readers. Lefi Gruffudd, chief editor and former student of R R Davies said,

We will be sending a copy of the book to Hollywood directors as well as to Welsh film producers.

Gerald Morgan, who translated the book from Welsh, paid tribute to the author,

Translating this book was for me an act of pietas and tribute to the Welsh historian of my time whom I admired above all others for his extraordinary combination of a razor-sharp mind with great personal warmth.

Readable narrative that’s more like an adventure novel than a history book.”
LORD DAFYDD ELIS-THOMAS

Combining scholarship with accessibility, this book gives an eminently readable and inspired account of one of Wales’s most popular heroes.
