A Llangollen International Eisteddfod First: Karl Jenkins To Conduct A Mass Choir of 300
On the 26th of March Karl Jenkins OBE releases his brand new EMI Classics album “The Peacemakers” which will be performed live at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod on the 5th of July this year. He will conduct a choir of 300, the largest choir ever to be assembled on the Llangollen International Festival stage.
He will be joined by Cardiff Singer of the World 2011 winner Valentina Nafornita, Texaco Young Musician of Wales winner Steffan Morris and a spectacular 300 voice choir to perform his latest exciting work.
Choirs from all over Wales will perform his work including Côr Caerdydd, Sirenian Singers, Côr Ieuenctid Môn, and Côr y Cwm as well as the Fezeka Choir from South Africa and the Llangollen International Choir.
Karl Jenkins conducted his ‘Mass of Peace’ in 2010 on the pavilion stage. He was also Day President in 2005.
“It’s such a privilege to be invited back to perform at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod this year and I’m very excited my work will be performed on such a prestigious stage” says Karl Jenkins
The Peacemakers offers inspiration and solace for a time in need of both. It features texts from some of the greatest peacemakers throughout history, including His new work includes texts from Ghandi, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, Albert Schweitzer, Terry Waite as well as Shelley, as well as texts from the Bible, Quran, Hindusim and new text specially written by Terry Waite and many more… . The work extols the Llangollen message of peace.
“The Peacemakers is dedicated to the memory of all those who lost their lives during armed conflict and, in particular, innocent civilians,” Karl Jenkins said recently. “When I composed The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace for the millennium, it was with the hope of looking forward to a century of peace. Sadly, nothing much has changed.”
This year he joins an all star line up including stars like Wynne Evans, Alison Balsom, Nicolla Benedetti and Leslie Garret and West End stars including Alfie Boe and John Owen Jones, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Musical Director Eilir Owen Griffiths says “I’m really looking forward to hearing his new work performed live in Llangollen it will certainly be one of the highlights of the festival, it’s a great honour for our newly formed Llangollen International Choir to perform with a world famous composer.”

Composer Karl Jenkins and A Really Big Chorus in “A Concert of Commemoration, Honoring the 10th Anniversary of 9/11”

The
world’s most popular living composer Karl Jenkins brings iconic music of
war and peace to Avery Fisher Hall on 9/11. England’s renowned
Really Big Chorus with conductor/composer René Clausen and the Distinguished
Concerts Orchestra International and Distinguished Concerts Singers
International will perform. This performance is presented by Distinguished
Concerts International New York DCINY, whose mission is to showcase
heart-stopping, innovative choral music at prestigious venues around the world.
The
program includes two works by Jenkins: “The Armed Man: A Mass for
Peace” and “For the Fallen: In Memoriam Alfryn
Jenkins.” Commissioned jointly by The Royal Armouries and Classic
FM, “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace” was initially inspired by the
Kosovan conflict, but the clear message of hope resounds even stronger years
later on this anniversary of 9/11.
“The
Armed Man” reflects on war and peace in the global world. It
incorporates songs and sacred texts of a traditional Western mass along with
influences, text, instrumentation and inspiration from Muslim, Hindu and
Japanese sources
In
a rapturous performance, by turns visceral and ethereal, the Mass was a
firebomb of orchestral and human voices. –The Times

Jenkins wrote “For the Fallen” in memory of his Welsh uncle, Alfryn
Jenkins, his uncle & viola player, who was captain of a Lancaster bomber
that was lost, with an all Welsh crew, over Berlin in 1944 while the composer
was an infant. It is set to the iconic poem by Laurence Binyon, which
incorporates the Last Post bugle call, a soprano solo and narration. The piece
debuted last year at the Festival of Remembrance at Royal Albert Hall.
This will be the US premiere of “For the Fallen.”
As
a composer, he recognises no boundaries - musical, commercial, geographical or
cultural. His is a way of thinking and composing that is perfectly in tune with

Karl
Jenkins is
the most performed living composer in the world with seventeen gold and
platinum disc awards. Born in Wales, Karl Jenkins studied the oboe and
graduated from Cardiff University, followed by post-graduate studies at
London’s Royal College of Music. A passion for jazz – he was a
member of the bands Nucleus and Soft Machine – led him to composition.
“The Armed Man” has been performed nearly 1,000 times in 20
different countries. Recent recordings include Gloria, Stella Natalis and Joy
to the World, Kiri Sings Karl with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa who received the
prestigious Lifetime Achievement in Music Award at the Classical BRIT Awards;
Requiem and Stabat Mater. Among his numerous awards, Jenkins was
awarded an OBE, by Her Majesty The Queen, in the 2005 New Year’s Honours
List and a CBE in the 2010 Birthday Honours List “for services to
music”.
Established
in 1974, the Really Big Chorus is Britain’s largest
choral society, made up of singers from hundreds of different choirs all over
the country as well as thousands of individuals. Drawing from a talented
pool of thousands of individuals, 400 singers will perform at this 9/11
memorial concert.
René
Clausen is
a celebrated American composer and the conductor of The Concordia Choir, and
associate professor of music at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota.
