West End Star, John Owen Jones Is Latest Addition To Llangollen 2012 Lineup

Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera star John Owen-Jones is the latest big name star to join the 2012 Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod concert series line-up.

Owen-Jones, who is originally from Burry Port, will feature in the Grand finale musical extravaganza on Sunday 8 July. The award-winning and record-breaking West End and Broadway performer joins classical singer and Go Compare advert star Wynne Evans, Evans’ brother Mark Llywelyn Evans, soprano Fflur Wyn and Côr CF1 on the iconic Llangollen Pavilion stage.

The announcement comes as concert and field tickets are officially released on general sale via the Box Office (01978 862001) and on the Eisteddfod website.

John Owen-Jones says, "I'm really looking forward to performing at the Llangollen Eisteddfod’s Grand Finale, so much so that I'll be flying in from Dublin especially to sing there. Everyone taking part are going to make sure the audience that night go home feeling the Eisteddfod kept the best show for last!"

Owen-Jones is currently reprising his role as The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera having previously a successful stint between 2001 and 2005, and becoming the longest running Phantom.

Other names confirmed to appear at Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in 2012, between Tuesday 3 July and Sunday 8 July, include Alfie Boe, Karl Jenkins, Lesley Garrett, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and instrumentalists Alison Balsom and Nicola Benedetti.

John Owen Jones – Artist Biography 

John Owen-Jones, from Burry Port in South Wales, is an award winning and record-breaking West End and Broadway performer. He is best known for his performances as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables and as The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera. 

After training at London’s Central School of Speech and Drama, John, at the age of twenty six became the youngest actor ever to play the role of Jean Valjean in the West End production of Les Miserables. He is one of only a handful of actors to have played the role of Valjean both in the West End and on Broadway following the revival of Les Miserables at the Broadhurst Theatre, New York in 2008. In a worldwide online poll, John was voted the “Best Ever Valjean” and “Best Ever Performer” in Les Miserables, by fans of the show.  

John returned to play the role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables for its 25th anniversary tour and was recently awarded the Manchester Evening News Award for the Best Actor in a Visiting Production for his performance as Jean Valjean, on the tour.  The Manchester Evening News described his performance as “a truly astonishing achievement that must be one of the greatest stage performances of all time.” John was also part of the Valjean quartet featured in the finale of the Les Miserable 25^th Anniversary Concert at the O2 Arena, London.  

John is currently reprising his role as The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera, at her Majesty’s Theatre, London. He initially played the role nearly 1500 times from 2001 to 2005, making him the West End’s longest running Phantom. The Daily Mail described John as being “better than all the talented actors who preceded him in the role.” 

Other roles include Ravenal in Raymond Gubbay’s production of Showboat at the Royal Albert Hall, Cleante in Moliere’s The Hypochondriac at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and Mr Elanson in A Little Night Music at the Royal National Theatre. 

John has performed as a soloist in concerts around the world from Bangkok to Bangor, North Wales! John has been a presenter for BBC Radio Wales and has made numerous appearances on television. John’s first solo recording ‘Hallelujah’, was released in 2006 on the Sain Label and his second album “John Owen Jones” was released in 2009. His third album will be released early next year, to coincide with a new UK tour of Phantom in January 2012.

Llangollen Eisteddfod Appoints New Music Director

Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod are pleased to announce that they have appointed Eilir Owen Griffiths, the highly successful conductor and composer, as their new Music Director to follow Mervyn Cousins who has left to take a senior post with the Associated Board of Royal Colleges of Music. 

Mr Griffiths, 30, a native of Denbigh and whose parents still live in Colwyn Bay, is a Tutor/Cultural Organiser at The University of Wales Trinity St David in Carmarthen, where, in addition to lecturing he is also a director for Musical Theatre productions and a singing teacher, as well as being Artistic Director of the Trinity Arts Festival.  He is best known throughout Wales as the Musical Director of the very well-known choirs CF1 and Côr Godre’r Garth with whom he has attained considerable success in competitions and concerts.  He conducts the college choir, and is also a highly-regarded composer, his most recent work being a “Requiem” written to celebrate the creation of a new university, which received its premiere in June 2011 with Bryn Terfel and Wynne Evans performing together with Eilir’s 3 choirs and the Chamber Orchestra of Wales.  In addition to his work in Wales, Eilir has considerable international contacts, especially with Poland and North America, and is the founder of the Stuart Burrows International Voice Award

Eilir said “I am very much looking forward to the challenge of maintaining and advancing the very high standards of the International Eisteddfod, and I am particularly anxious to increase the involvement of children in this great festival”   

Eisteddfod Chairman Phil Davies said “We are all very excited at this new appointment of a young man who, while at the heart of the Welsh music scene, has a wide and international outlook which will equip him well for the task of taking the Llangollen Eisteddfod forward to even greater achievements.”

Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod – Senior appointment for North Wales’ largest music festival

Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod is seeking to appoint a new music director. The vacancy follows the announcement earlier this year by the current chief executive, Mervyn Cousins that he would be leaving after next month’s festival.

The senior post, will oversee the artistic and musical side of the annual Eisteddfod, currently in its 65^thyear.

Phil Davies, Chairman of the International Eisteddfod, says: “We owe a great debt to Mervyn for all he has done for the Eisteddfod during his eight years.  We hope to attract a successor who will carry the Eisteddfod forward while maintaining the high artistic standards that have been established over the last 65 years.”

A number of well-known musical figures have held the post of music director in past years, including Arwel Hughes and Roy Bohana. 

The first music director was WS Gwynn Williams, one of the founders of the Eisteddfod, shortly after the end of World War II.

It aimed then, and continues to bring people together from different nationalities as an antidote to the ravages of war and has been a strong influence for peace and goodwill ever since.

The world famous Eisteddfod stage has held performances by Pavarotti, Shirley Bassey, Katherine Jenkins and Bryn Terfel. This year, Lulu, Russell Watson, Ruthie Henshall and McFly will each perform during the festival.

Applicants interested in the position of music director, which carries an honorarium, are invited to experience the unique international festival taking place in Llangollen from 4 – 10 July.

Top level intervention ensures the first ever Pakistani soloist can perform at Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod

Labour MP, Stephen Timms intervened to ensure a musician from Pakistan was permitted entry into the UK and able to compete in this year’s Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod. Timms wrote to the UK Border Agency to ensure Zeshan Rahab, a Christian singer from North West Punjab, was allowed to travel to the UK in order to perform and compete in North Wales’ largest music festival.

Mr Timms, wrote from his hospital bed after being stabbed by a Pakistani woman in his East London constituency surgery in May 2010. 

Zeshan Rahab will be the first ever Pakistani soloist in the international festival’s 65 year history.  He will sing and play the harmonium, performing traditional Urdu Ghazal music that is of deep and personal meaning to the Pakistani Christian Church.  Zeshan said, “It is a great honour for me to be the first Pakistani soloist to perform and compete at such a well regarded international festival. I’m proud to be able to bring Urdu Ghazal music to the UK and Wales.“  Zeshan went on to say “I’m especially looking forward to performing in Llangollen, a place that I have heard is so beautiful.” 

Pakistan is home to more than 187 million people, 97% of which are Muslim.  In recent years tension between the majority Muslim communities and minority Christians groups has risen. Zeshan’s hometown is Gujranwala in North West Punjab, an industrial town of four million Muslims and half a million Christians, who have lived together peacefully for many years.  Recently false blasphemy charges were filed against a Christian father and son from the Christian Technical College, and violence erupted against the poor Christian colonies of Gulzar and Aziz.
 

Moderate Muslim and Christian leaders organized peace rallies where ghazal music was played and the situation has since improved. The blasphemy law has seen many Christians as well as Muslims arrested under false cases for personal grudges or enmity and even professional jealously. 

Encouraged by his Christian parents, Zeshan began to learn harmonium at the age of 12. Like many Pakistanis Zeshan left his country to find work abroad, where poverty is a growing concern.  He was discovered working as a labourer in Dubai and brought to the U.K. by the Anglain Chaplain of the inter-denominational Holy Trinity Church, Dubai, Revd. John Weir who said: “Zeshan is really looking forward to performing at the Eisteddfod. It was struggle bringing him to the UK, but I believe his talent should be shared with the world and with so many different countries performing and competing in Llangollen this year.  ” 

His journey to Llangollen has not been without incident. After Christian friends and supporters in Dubai offered sponsorship for his travel costs, his harmonium was taken apart and damaged by airport security.

 

Mervyn Cousins, Chief Executive of Llangollen Eisteddfod said: “We are very excited about having Zeshan compete and perform at the Eisteddfod.  His music really captures the true essence of the Eisteddfod which was established to promote international peace through music and dance.” Cousins went on to say: “His story is one of the triumphs of peace, love, healing and harmony overcoming the politics of war and hate.” 

Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod takes place in North Wales from 4-10 July with more than 4,000 competitors from 50 countries taking part.  Zeshan will be performing on Wednesday 6 July on the outdoor stage. 

Alongside the competitors, internationally successful artists Lulu, Russell Watson, Ruthie Henshall and McFly will be performing on the world famous Eisteddfod stage.

The Prime Minister acknowledges "the work of the (Llangollen) Eisteddfod for world peace" as he joins Terry Waite CBE to make International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.

On 29th May, Terry Waite CBE, the President of Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod and David Cameron will pay tribute to more than 124,000 UN peacekeepers, deployed in more than 15 countries around the globe.  Other prominent figures have offered their own peace messages that will be sent out alongside the peace message from the small North Wales town of Llangollen. The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers pays tribute to all men and women serving in United Nations peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication and courage, and to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace. In his message, the Prime Minister said: “It is important that we recognise the work of all the men and women who have served as United Nations Peacekeepers throughout the world. We should also honour the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.” 

He went on: “I would like to acknowledge the work of the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod for world peace by gathering together young people from different religious, ethnic and social backgrounds throughout the world to share and express themselves through the language of music."

May 29th marks the anniversary of the first UN peacekeeping mission, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO), which began operations in Palestine in 1948.

This was just eleven months after the first Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, held in June 1947.

This year, Llangollen will host its 65th week-long festival from 4th -10th July 2011 with competitors arriving in the north Wales town from more than 50 countries.

Retaining the original ethos of promoting peace through the arts, the Eisteddfod today combines a mix of globally successful superstars, such as Lulu and McFly, with competitors from around the world.

Among the highlights will be performers from Iran, Columbia, South Africa, India and Pakistan.

Terry Waite, who spent nearly five years held captive in Lebanon and released 20 years ago this year, made reference to the origins of festival: “The message of peace is the central message of the Eisteddfod and those who participate in the gathering frequently find that they establish new friendships and gain new understandings with those who may have been seen as threatening opponents.”

Terry Waite also extends an invitation to join the ‘Sound of Silence’ at 12 noon on Thursday 7th July. This iconic show of unity will see the Llangollen Pavilion and surrounding eisteddfod field fall silent, and volunteers, visitors and competitors will link arms and offer the Llangollen Message of Peace to the world. Terry Waite said: “The work for Peace in our time is never ending and in the Eisteddfod week we are all invited to re-commit ourselves to work for peace in our own lives and in the world around us.”

A vibrant day devoted to British and world folk music is being launched at this year’s International Eisteddfod in Llangollen. For the first time, a special line-up of folk artists will entertain crowds gathering on the field on Friday 8th July. The programme aims to compliment the competitive performers drawn from around the world.

The artists include Emily Smith, one of the leading singers in the contemporary Scottish folk scene. Her powerful, clear vocals have gained her worldwide recognition and many awards, including BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician of the Year Award and Scots Singer of the Year at the Scots Trad Music awards. Emily Smith said: “‘I’m thrilled to be performing at the Eisteddfod this year and I can’t wait to meet some of the other folk performers.’

Jamie Smiths MABON evolved from a traditional four-piece Welsh band into six highly accomplished musicians playing what can only be described as Interceltic music.   Each song is a true exploration of forms and styles found in Celtic music forged into a new sound. Jamie Smith, front man of the band who lives in Risca, South Wales said: “Mabon are really looking forward to returning to Llangollen this year. It is always a pleasure performing at one of Wales’ most prestigious events.”

Another Welshman performing at the Festival is Martyn Joseph who has had five top 50 UK Chart hits and toured alongside legends such as Shirley Bassey, Celine Dion, Joan Armatrading and Jools Holland. Martyn went on to win the coveted title of Best Male Artist at the BBC Welsh Music Awards in 2004 and in October of 2010 he released his 31 Studio Album.

Winners of the 2011 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Duo, Nancy Kerr and James Fagan also join the line up for Folk Friday. As well as being great exponents of their instruments (fiddle, viola and guitar-bouzouki) both are regarded as fine and influential singers. 

Llangollen’s line-up includes a number of emerging bands and artists, many of whom have competed at the International Eisteddfod in the past and will now be performing alongside some of the top names in the world of folk music.

Among those are singer-songwriter Les Barker, traditional Shropshire folk band Bartram, Brookes and Weatherall, Ty Elise, eight Bretons whose meeting place was the only Welsh pub in Brittany called Ty Elise, Champion clog dancers and and winner of BBC Radio 2 Best Live Act 2009 Laura Connolly and Dave Oliver.

Frank Hennessy, presenter of BBC Radio Wales’  Celtic Heartbeat - the weekly programme of folk roots and acoustic music from the Celtic nations and the rest of the world and one of Llangollen Eisteddfod’s Day Presidents, will be broadcasting his radio programme from the Eisteddfod field on the Thursday and Folk Friday. Frank first appeared at Llangollen in the Royal Hotel Folk Club in 1970 as a member of The Hennesseys. Frank Hennessey said: "I'm a folk fanatic. It's shaped my life, and the very mention of `Llangollen` gives me a terrific lift, because I know I'm going to get a vision of our world as it can be, at its best. Continents, nations and tribes coming together in a great celebration of folk music"

Llangollen to Erect Hollywood Style Sign

Llangollen town looks set to honour the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfods 65th Anniversary by erecting a ‘Hollywood Style Sign’ in the Beautiful and Iconic Hills over looking the Festival Site.

Last night (31st March) the council’s planning applications sub committee gave the go ahead for a £500,000 sign to be built in the breathtaking vista above Llangollen town amongst the Berwyn Mountains. The sign will mark the council’s gratitude to thousands of competitors and visitors the Eisteddfod brings to Llangollen each year.

Cllr. Joe King deputy chairperson of Llangollen Town’s planning applications secondary sub committee, said: “This new landmark for Llangollen is a fitting tribute and celebration of the millions of people who have visited the Llangollen Eisteddfod over the last 65 years.” Cllr. King went on to say “It is a sign of this county’s gratitude to these exceptional people who organize the Eisteddfod year after year and it will stand as an iconic Welsh monument marking how music and culture can bring people from all walks of life and all nations together.”

The proposal is promoted by the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, and Mervyn Cousins, Chief Executive of the Eisteddfod was thrilled by the result. “Some members of the board we’re worried that we might have opposition to the sign from some locals, but it just goes to show that yet again, this small town can pull together and make a big difference.” Local shopkeeper Faye Kinnit, who helped the campaign for the sign has said “I grew up wanting to live in Hollywood, but with all the global superstars who come to Llangollen every year there’s never been a need for me to make the move. It’s only fitting that the sign has been approved.”

This years music festivals has attracted a host of stars including McFly, Russell Watson, Lulu and Julian Lloyd-Webber. There will also be over five thousand singers, dancers and instrumentalists from around 50 countries perform to audiences of more than 100,000 over the 7 days of the event.

Monday 4th

Tuesday 5th

Daytime: International Children’s Day

Strains of Hope: On the field, 5000 children will be transported to Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas, in a day of joyful, uplifting performances and workshops showcasing music and dance from around the world. The Peace Message from the Children of Wales is presented this year by school children from the Chirk and Glyn Ceiriog area. Alex Pascall from Grenada will delight us with some Caribbean harmony and Steven Sogo and his band Hope Street will perform.

The Parade. Parade of Nations. 4.30pm

The colour and excitement of the Festival spreads into the streets of Llangollen town with the Parade of Nations. Each year over 60 years, a vibrant tradition has continued.

Wednesday 6th

Daytime: A Feast of Costume, Music and Dance.

The outstanding Llangollen competitions begin and continue throughout the day, with choirs and folk dancers from over 20 countries. Also featuring the best young soloists in the world.

Thursday 7th

Daytime: Join the musical party; a day full of competitions for young performers with dazzling talent. A thousand children perform.

On the field: A Festival within a Festival – all day fun for everyone. Music, dance, arts, crafts, story-telling, demonstrations and competitions for all.
